Meet Leat – Leat felt like she was out of options and turned to HFLA for help.
"This past May, I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in Biological Basis of Behavior. I will be applying to medical school this coming spring; however, before I can do so, I need to complete the last two pre-med requirements: Biochemistry and Molecular Cell Biology.
I applied for a federal loan through FAFSA, but the University notified me that they will not accept the funds because I am in a non-degree program. I’ve also been denied private student loans for the same reason. Although I am not formally working towards a degree or certificate, these prerequisites are set out by the Association of American Medical Colleges. If I cannot find a way to take these courses I will not be able to take the MCAT and apply to medical school."
Leat felt like she was out of options and turned to HFLA for help. We are excited and proud to have the funds to help her on her journey in becoming Dr. Perez. Leat's dream is worth paying for.
Meet Ernestine – HFLA helped Ernestine stay in her home.
All of us have dreamed of the "golden years" - those comfortable years of retirement following a life of hard work. Can you picture receiving a three-day eviction notice after living in your home for over 50 years, just before your 79th birthday? This happened to Ernestine. She was unaware that she fell behind on her property taxes, and a predatory business bought the debt and tried to force her out. HFLA's loan helped Ernestine save her home.
Meet Jayson – The first in his family to attend college, has a job at the Whitney Museum of American Art upon graduation.
"Being the first in my family to attend college, I have always believed in setting tangible goals that I can realistically conquer. With the aid of the education loan, one of those goals came to fruition simply because of the support of the HFLA" - Jayson
Meet Frank – From Homeless to Entrepreneur
“There’s no better feeling than getting up in the morning nowadays. I can deal with that. I like it.”
Frank arrived at a men's shelter in 2015 after falling into depression and alcohol abuse following the death of his fiancée.
"Before long I wasn't going to work, I wasn't going back to my apartment, I was alienating myself from everyone," Wilkinson said. He was homeless and hopeless, but after five months of one-on-one counseling with Better Future Facilitators (a non-profit with the goal of helping homeless individuals become self-supporting and ultimately create jobs for others), Frank got a loan from both Better Future Facilitators and HFLA to start his cleaning and exterminating business, Pro Help & More.
Meet Richard T. Streem DDS – “HFLA has been part of my educational life since I started dental school many years ago”.
"HFLA has been part of my educational life since I started dental school many years ago. I would never have been able to finish my education without their help. I know from being active on their board that they help so many worthy people. Now it’s time to give back so HFLA can keep helping others". - Richard T. Streem, DDS
